Overview
Abdallah Somekh was a leading legal scholar and educator whose teaching helped revitalize rabbinic learning in nineteenth-century Baghdad. At Bet Zilkha, he trained students who later served communities across Iraq and the wider Baghdadi commercial diaspora. Somekh’s responsa address ritual practice, family law, commerce, communal custom, and questions created by new technologies and economic conditions. He generally worked through established legal sources while giving substantial weight to local practice. His influence rested less upon public office than upon sustained teaching, correspondence, and the authority of students who transmitted his methods internationally.
