Emanuel Nunes Carvalho and America’s First Printed Jewish Sermon

Emanuel Nunes Carvalho served as a religious leader of Philadelphia’s Mikveh Israel and later Charleston’s Beth Elohim. After the death of Gershom Mendes Seixas, Carvalho delivered and published a memorial sermon honoring his predecessor’s learning, patriotism, and communal service. The printed text is generally identified as the first Jewish sermon published in the United States. Carvalho’s English-language preaching reflects a congregation adapting Western Sephardic religious forms to American print and public culture. His career demonstrates how sermons, memorialization, and publishing helped establish a Jewish clerical voice within the early republic.
