Emanuel Nunes Carvalho served as a religious leader of Philadelphia’s Mikveh Israel and later Charleston’s Beth Elohim. After the death of Gershom Mendes Seixas, Carvalho delivered and published a memorial sermon honoring his predecessor’s learning, patriotism, and communal service. The printed text is generally identified as the first Jewish sermon published in the United States.
