Overview
Belgrade’s Jewish community repeatedly experienced siege, conquest, expulsion, return, and reconstruction as Ottoman and Habsburg forces contested the city. Sephardic residents organized synagogues, trade, charity, courts, and neighborhood life while adapting to changing systems of taxation and legal authority. Warfare could destroy property and scatter families, yet commercial and kinship ties encouraged return when conditions permitted. Belgrade’s history cautions against treating Ottoman Sephardic settlement as uniformly secure or continuous. The community’s institutions were rebuilt through mobility, regional connections, and negotiation with rulers whose control over the city repeatedly changed.
