Overview
Hasdai ibn Shaprut served the Umayyad court of Córdoba as a physician, diplomat, translator, and political intermediary. His command of Arabic, Hebrew, and Latin made him valuable in negotiations with Christian and Byzantine representatives. He also supported Jewish scholars, poets, and correspondence networks extending toward North Africa and the eastern Jewish academies. Hasdai’s position did not amount to modern political equality, but it created significant opportunities for cultural patronage. His career helped establish conditions in which Hebrew scholarship and literary production flourished in tenth-century al-Andalus.
