Overview
Jonah ibn Janah brought medieval Hebrew grammar and lexicography to an extraordinary level of precision. Writing primarily in Judeo-Arabic, he analyzed roots, irregular verbs, syntax, particles, and biblical vocabulary through comparison with Arabic and other Semitic languages. His major linguistic works were later combined as the Book of Exact Investigation and translated into Hebrew. Ibn Janah treated grammar not as ornamental learning but as a necessary foundation for interpreting scripture correctly. His methods influenced generations of Sephardic commentators and helped establish Hebrew linguistics as a systematic intellectual discipline.
