Overview
Kahal Shalom Synagogue stands within the old Jewish quarter of Rhodes and reflects centuries of Ottoman Sephardic life on the island. Its interior arrangement, central reading platform, ark, women’s area, and adjacent courtyard served a Judeo-Spanish-speaking congregation with links to Anatolia and other eastern Mediterranean communities. The building survived even though the community was devastated during the Holocaust. As a historical site, Kahal Shalom documents worship, neighborhood organization, migration, and memory. Its significance rests not on architectural beauty alone but on the communal world once organized around it.
