Overview
La Benevolencija was founded in Sarajevo as a Sephardic Jewish educational and charitable association. It offered scholarships, vocational assistance, cultural programming, and support for young people seeking advancement within a changing Habsburg and Yugoslav society. The organization reflected new forms of voluntary association while remaining rooted in communal responsibility. Its activities also reveal debates over language, modernization, class, and relations between Sephardic tradition and broader civic life. La Benevolencija demonstrates how philanthropy became an organized instrument for education and social mobility rather than only immediate relief for poverty.
