Overview

Mikvé Israel developed into the central congregation of Curaçao’s Portuguese Jewish community, whose members maintained close connections with Amsterdam and other Atlantic ports. Merchants participated in regional trade, while communal leaders organized worship, education, charity, and burial. The synagogue complex expressed both Dutch Caribbean circumstances and Western Sephardic ritual traditions. Curaçao also occupied a difficult place within an economy sustained by colonialism and slavery, requiring its Jewish history to be studied within the wider structures of the Atlantic world. The community became an influential source of migration and institutional models elsewhere in the Americas.
