Overview

Nefusot Yehuda Synagogue, also called the Flemish Synagogue, was established by merchants in Gibraltar who wished to preserve formal customs associated with Dutch and Western Sephardic congregations. Its foundation demonstrates that Gibraltar’s Jewish population was internally diverse, combining strong Moroccan connections with influences from London, Amsterdam, and other European centers. The synagogue supported worship, study, charity, and communal identity within a British-controlled Mediterranean port. Later reconstruction altered its architecture, but the institution endured. Nefusot Yehuda records how migration and ritual preference could create distinct congregations within one relatively small Jewish community.
