Overview
David Abudarham composed his celebrated commentary on blessings and prayers in fourteenth-century Seville. Rather than presenting the prayer book as a fixed sequence requiring no explanation, he traced textual sources, ritual procedures, calendar rules, and differences among regional customs. He drew upon the Talmuds, geonic writings, earlier liturgical authorities, and contemporary legal traditions. The book helped readers understand why prayers were arranged and performed in particular ways. Repeated manuscript copying and later printing made Sefer Abudarham an enduring guide to Sephardic liturgy and the historical development of Jewish worship.
