Overview
A destructive fire in early twentieth-century Edirne damaged numerous Jewish homes and synagogues. The community subsequently constructed a large central synagogue with Ottoman authorization, replacing several smaller congregational spaces. Its design reflected monumental European synagogue architecture while serving a Ladino-speaking Ottoman Sephardic population. The building embodied both communal recovery and institutional consolidation. Its later decline followed migration, economic change, nationalism, and the shrinking of Jewish life in the city. The Grand Synagogue records how disaster, philanthropy, imperial permission, architecture, and demographic transformation shaped a major Balkan Sephardic community.
