Overview

The messianic movement surrounding Sabbatai Zevi spread rapidly through Jewish communities during the 1660s, drawing strength from letters, itinerant prophets, penitential rituals, and existing traditions of redemption. Many Ottoman Sephardic communities became important centers of expectation and debate. Sabbatai’s conversion to Islam produced shock, reinterpretation, and institutional efforts to restore order, although some followers continued to defend his mission. Gershom Scholem’s reconstruction remains foundational, while later scholarship has refined the roles of prophecy, communication, and local context. The crisis reveals both the connectivity and the internal diversity of the Sephardic world.
