Baruj Benacerraf reshaped modern immunology by demonstrating that genetic factors regulate how immune systems respond to particular antigens. Born in Caracas to a Spanish-Moroccan Jewish father and Algerian Jewish mother, he was educated in France and the United States and developed an international scientific career. His experiments identified immune-response genes associated with the major histocompatibility complex, clarifying why individuals differ in their capacity to recognize and react to foreign substances. This research helped establish the genetic basis of immune regulation and influenced transplantation biology, autoimmune-disease research, vaccine science, and cancer immunology. He shared the 1980 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Jean Dausset and George Snell. As a laboratory leader and institutional director, Benacerraf also trained an influential generation of immunologists.
