The Sephardic Azkara, also spelled “azkarah” or “azkoro,” is a cherished memorial service deeply rooted in our tradition, held to honor the memory of our departed loved ones. Derived from the Hebrew word “zachor,” meaning “remember,” the Azkara serves as a poignant tribute.
During the service, Psalms and prayers are recited, candles are lit, and charity is given in memory of the deceased. Typically observed on the anniversary of their passing or other significant dates such as Jewish holidays, the Azkara is a vital part of our mourning customs, preserving the legacy of our loved ones and providing solace to the bereaved.
Central to Jewish grieving rituals is the Kaddish prayer. While the Kaddish itself possesses no magical attributes, its strength lies in the collective energy of generations who have utilized it as a conduit from sorrow to hope.
Traditionally, the Kaddish serves as a reminder of our interconnectedness within a compassionate and supportive community. Even amidst loss, it encourages us to perform acts of kindness and contribute positively to the world in honor of our departed. Throughout the mourning period and the week preceding the anniversary of a loved one’s passing, the Kaddish is recited.
If reciting the Kaddish is not feasible, consider undertaking a good deed or offering a personal prayer instead. We are here to support you by arranging a Zoom minyan or arranging for someone to recite the Kaddish on your behalf.
