Our Story: A New Beginning for an Ancient Legacy

Preserving the past. Living the present. Building a global Sephardic future.

A Sephardic Jewish Heritage Platform Rooted in Tradition and Adaptation

Sephardic U is a global Sephardic Jewish heritage platform that emerged during the COVID-19 lockdowns. Originally founded as a virtual minyan by a Moroccan entrepreneur and an Iraqi rabbi, it quickly grew beyond its initial purpose. What started as a way to maintain spiritual connection during unprecedented isolation evolved into a vibrant digital hub dedicated to preserving and celebrating Sephardic Jewish culture, knowledge, and community worldwide.

While Sephardic U was born from a moment of crisis, it was never intended to be temporary. Instead, it offers a lasting solution to a timeless challenge: how to keep Sephardic identity alive, relevant, and accessible across generations and continents.

Sephardic Tradition: Adapting Without Losing Identity

The strength and longevity of Sephardic tradition come from its remarkable ability to adapt. For centuries, Sephardic communities have embraced new environments, technologies, and realities without compromising their rich customs and faith. Our common-sense approach to halakhic boundaries and inclusive spirit have helped Sephardic practices survive and flourish. For example, in any Moroccan home around the world on Shabbat morning, the smell of dafina (hamin) fills the air, prayers are sung as they have been for generations, and respect for family remains central — a living testament to this balance between tradition and adaptability.

Sephardic U embodies this legacy. It is not simply a repository of heritage but a living, breathing Sephardic Jewish heritage platform that nurtures the past while embracing the future.

Today, Sephardic U connects members from over 26 countries through daily virtual minyanim, rich educational content, and annual cultural programs like Hanukkah at Sea. Our mission extends beyond prayer: we archive melodies, publish resources grounded in Sephardic halakha and custom, and foster an inclusive global community.

Whether you are born into Sephardic tradition, returning to it, or simply drawn by its beauty, Sephardic U welcomes you to join this vibrant platform — where heritage and innovation meet.
