Deuteronomy 26:1–29:8, with the seven aliyot and maftir.
Read Monday and Thursday mornings, and at Shabbat Minḥa the week before: Deuteronomy 26:1–15.
Shabbat afternoon begins next week’s parasha, Nitzavim, in three aliyot.
Read on weekday Rosh Hodesh, after half Hallel (Sephardi custom: without a berakha): Bamidbar 28:1–15, in four aliyot. Ya’aleh VeYavo and Musaf are added today.
Sephardi haftarah: Isaiah 60:1–22.
When you enter the land that your God יהוה is giving you as a heritage, and you possess it and settle in it,
you shall take some of every first fruit of the soil, which you harvest from the land that your God יהוה is giving you, put it in a basket and go to the place where your God יהוה will choose to establish the divine name.
You shall go to the priest in charge at that time and say to him, “I acknowledge this day before your God יהוה that I have entered the land that יהוה swore to our fathers to assign us.”
The priest shall take the basket from your hand and set it down in front of the altar of your God
You shall then recite as follows before your God יהוה: “My father was a fugitive Aramean. He went down to Egypt with meager numbers and sojourned there; but there he became a great and very populous nation.
The Egyptians dealt harshly with us and oppressed us; they imposed heavy labor upon us.
We cried to יהוה, the God of our ancestors, and יהוה heard our plea and saw our plight, our misery, and our oppression.
Clamamos a Hashem, Elohim de nuestros padres, y Hashem escuchó nuestra voz. Vio nuestra aflicción, nuestro arduo trabajo y nuestra opresión,
יהוה freed us from Egypt by a mighty hand, by an outstretched arm and awesome power, and by signs and portents,
bringing us to this place and giving us this land, a land flowing with milk and honey.
Wherefore I now bring the first fruits of the soil which You, יהוה, have given me.” You shall leave it before your God יהוה and bow low before your God יהוה.
And you shall enjoy, together with the [family of the] Levite and the stranger in your midst, all the bounty that your God יהוה has bestowed upon you and your household.
When you have set aside in full the tenth part of your yield—in the third year, the year of the tithe —and have given it to the [family of the] Levite, the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow, that they may eat their fill in your settlements,
you shall declare before your God יהוה: “I have cleared out the consecrated portion from the house; and I have given it to the [family of the] Levite, the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow, just as You commanded me; I have neither transgressed nor neglected any of Your commandments:
I have not eaten of it while in mourning, I have not cleared out any of it while I was impure, and I have not deposited any of it with the dead. I have obeyed my God יהוה; I have done just as You commanded me.
No he comido de ello estando en luto, ni lo he sacado estando impuro, ni de ello he dado nada para los muertos. He escuchado la voz de Hashem mi Elohim, he hecho conforme a todo lo que me has mandado.
Look down from Your holy abode, from heaven, and bless Your people Israel and the soil You have given us, a land flowing with milk and honey, as You swore to our fathers.”
Your God יהוה commands you this day to observe these laws and rules; observe them faithfully with all your heart and soul.
You have affirmed this day that יהוה is your God, in whose ways you will walk, whose laws and commandments and rules you will observe, and whom you will obey.
And יהוה has affirmed this day that you are, as promised, God’s treasured people who shall observe all the divine commandments,
and that [God] will set you, in fame and renown and glory, high above all the nations that [God] has made; and that you shall be, as promised, a holy people to your God יהוה.
Moses and the elders of Israel charged the people, saying: Observe all the Instruction that I enjoin upon you this day.
As soon as you have crossed the Jordan into the land that your God יהוה is giving you, you shall set up large stones. Coat them with plaster
and inscribe upon them all the words of this Teaching. When you cross over to enter the land that your God יהוה is giving you, a land flowing with milk and honey, as יהוה, the God of your ancestors, promised you—
upon crossing the Jordan, you shall set up these stones, about which I charge you this day, on Mount Ebal, and coat them with plaster.
There, too, you shall build an altar to your God יהוה, an altar of stones. Do not wield an iron tool over them;
you must build the altar of your God יהוה of unhewn stones. You shall offer on it burnt offerings to your God יהוה,
and you shall sacrifice there offerings of well-being and eat them, rejoicing before your God יהוה.
And on those stones you shall inscribe every word of this Teaching most distinctly.
Moses and the levitical priests spoke to all Israel, saying: Silence! Hear, O Israel! Today you have become the people of your God
Heed your God יהוה and observe the divine commandments and laws, which I enjoin upon you this day.
Thereupon Moses charged the people, saying:
Aquel día Moshé ordenó al pueblo diciendo:
After you have crossed the Jordan, the following shall stand on Mount Gerizim when the blessing for the people is spoken: Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Joseph, and Benjamin.
And for the curse, the following shall stand on Mount Ebal: Reuben, Gad, Asher, Zebulun, Dan, and Naphtali.
The Levites shall then proclaim in a loud voice to all the people of Israel:
Cursed be any party who makes a sculptured or molten image, abhorred by יהוה, a craftsman’s handiwork, and sets it up in secret.—And all the people shall respond, Amen.

Cursed be whoever will not uphold the terms of this Teaching and observe them.—And all the people shall say, Amen.

Blessed shall you be in the city and blessed shall you be in the country.
Blessed shall be your issue from the womb, your produce from the soil, and the offspring of your cattle, the calving of your herd and the lambing of your flock.
Blessed shall be your basket and your kneading bowl.
«Bendita será tu canasta y tu masa.»
Blessed shall you be in your comings and blessed shall you be in your goings.
«Bendito serás cuando entres, y bendito serás cuando salgas.»
יהוה will put to rout before [your army] the enemies who attack you; they will march out against you by a single road, but flee from you by many roads.
יהוה will ordain blessings for you upon your barns and upon all your undertakings: you will be blessed in the land that your God יהוה is giving you.
יהוה will establish you as God’s holy people, as was sworn to you, if you keep the commandments of your God יהוה and walk in God’s ways.
And all the peoples of the earth shall see that יהוה’s name is proclaimed over you, and they shall stand in fear of you.
יהוה will give you abounding prosperity in your issue from the womb, the offspring of your cattle, and the produce of your soil in the land that יהוה swore to your fathers to assign to you.
יהוה will open for you that bounteous store, the heavens, to provide rain for your land in season and to bless all your undertakings. You will be creditor to many nations, but debtor to none.
יהוה will make you the head, not the tail; you will always be at the top and never at the bottom—if only you obey and faithfully observe the commandments of your God יהוה that I enjoin upon you this day,

and do not deviate to the right or to the left from any of the commandments that I enjoin upon you this day and turn to the worship of other gods.
But if you do not obey your God יהוה to observe faithfully all the commandments and laws which I enjoin upon you this day, all these curses shall come upon you and take effect:

You shall grope at noon as the blind grope in the dark; you shall not prosper in your ventures, but shall be constantly abused and robbed, with none to give help.

you shall have to serve—in hunger and thirst, naked and lacking everything—the enemies whom יהוה will let loose against you. [God] will put an iron yoke upon your neck until you are wiped out.

יהוה will bring a nation against you from afar, from the end of the earth, which will swoop down like the eagle—a nation whose language you do not understand,

It shall devour the offspring of your cattle and the produce of your soil, until you have been wiped out, leaving you nothing of new grain, wine, or oil, of the calving of your herds and the lambing of your flocks, until it has brought you to ruin.

you shall eat your own issue, the flesh of your sons and daughters that your God יהוה has assigned to you, because of the desperate straits to which your enemy shall reduce you.
The householder who is most tender and fastidious among you shall be too mean to his brother and the wife of his bosom and the children he has spared
to share with any of them the flesh of the children that he eats, because he has nothing else left as a result of the desperate straits to which your enemy shall reduce you in all your towns.
And she who is most tender and dainty among you, so tender and dainty that she would never venture to set a foot on the ground, shall begrudge the husband of her bosom, and her son and her daughter,
the afterbirth that issues from between her legs and the babies she bears; she shall eat them secretly, because of utter want, in the desperate straits to which your enemy shall reduce you in your towns.
If you fail to observe faithfully all the terms of this Teaching that are written in this book, to reverence this honored and awesome Name, your God
יהוה will inflict extraordinary plagues upon you and your offspring, strange and lasting plagues, malignant and chronic diseases—
bringing back upon you all the sicknesses of Egypt that you dreaded so, and they shall cling to you.
Moreover, יהוה will bring upon you all the other diseases and plagues that are not mentioned in this book of Teaching, until you are wiped out.
You shall be left a scant few, after having been as numerous as the stars in the skies, because you did not heed the command of your God
And as יהוה once delighted in making you prosperous and many, so will יהוה now delight in causing you to perish and in wiping you out; you shall be torn from the land that you are about to enter and possess.
יהוה will scatter you among all the peoples from one end of the earth to the other, and there you shall serve other gods, wood and stone, whom neither you nor your ancestors have experienced.
Yet even among those nations you shall find no peace, nor shall your foot find a place to rest. יהוה will give you there an anguished heart and eyes that pine and a despondent spirit.
The life you face shall be precarious; you shall be in terror, night and day, with no assurance of survival.
In the morning you shall say, “If only it were evening!” and in the evening you shall say, “If only it were morning!”—because of what your heart shall dread and your eyes shall see.
יהוה will send you back to Egypt in galleys, by a route which I told you you should not see again. There you shall offer yourselves for sale to your enemies as male and female slaves, but none will buy.
These are the terms of the covenant which יהוה commanded Moses to conclude with the Israelites in the land of Moab, in addition to the covenant which was made with them at Horeb.
Moses summoned all Israel and said to them: You have seen all that יהוה did before your very eyes in the land of Egypt, to Pharaoh and to all his courtiers and to his whole country:
the wondrous feats that you saw with your own eyes, those prodigious signs and marvels.
Yet to this day יהוה has not given you a mind to understand or eyes to see or ears to hear.
I led you through the wilderness forty years; the clothes on your back did not wear out, nor did the sandals on your feet;
you had no bread to eat and no wine or other intoxicant to drink—that you might know that I יהוה am your God.

We took their land and gave it to the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh as their heritage.

Therefore observe faithfully all the terms of this covenant, that you may succeed in all that you undertake.

יהוה spoke to Moses, saying:
El Eterno habló a Moshé diciendo:
Command the Israelite people and say to them: Be punctilious in presenting to Me at stated times the offerings of food due Me, as offerings by fire of pleasing odor to Me.
Say to them: These are the offerings by fire that you are to present to יהוה: As a regular burnt offering every day, two yearling lambs without blemish.
Say to them: These are the offerings by fire that you are to present to יהוה: As a regular burnt offering every day, two yearling lambs without blemish.
You shall offer one lamb in the morning, and the other lamb you shall offer at twilight.
And as a meal offering, there shall be a tenth of an ephah of choice flour with a quarter of a hin of beaten oil mixed in—
the regular burnt offering instituted at Mount Sinai —an offering by fire of pleasing odor to יהוה.
The libation with it shall be a quarter of a hin for each lamb, to be poured in the sacred precinct as an offering of fermented drink to יהוה.
The other lamb you shall offer at twilight, preparing the same meal offering and libation as in the morning—an offering by fire of pleasing odor to יהוה.
On the sabbath day: two yearling lambs without blemish, together with two-tenths of a measure of choice flour with oil mixed in as a meal offering, and with the proper libation—
a burnt offering for every sabbath, in addition to the regular burnt offering and its libation.
On your new moons you shall present a burnt offering to יהוה: two bulls of the herd, one ram, and seven yearling lambs, without blemish.
As meal offering for each bull: three-tenths of a measure of choice flour with oil mixed in. As meal offering for each ram: two-tenths of a measure of choice flour with oil mixed in.
As meal offering for each lamb: a tenth of a measure of fine flour with oil mixed in. Such shall be the burnt offering of pleasing odor, an offering by fire to יהוה.
Their libations shall be: half a hin of wine for a bull, a third of a hin for a ram, and a quarter of a hin for a lamb. That shall be the monthly burnt offering for each new moon of the year.
And there shall be one goat as a sin offering to יהוה, to be offered in addition to the regular burnt offering and its libation.
On Rosh Hodesh Tevet during Hanukkah, these verses are read in three aliyot (Kohen 1–5, Levi 6–10, Yisrael 11–15) and Revi’i reads from the Hanukkah portion. On Shabbat Rosh Hodesh, the weekly parasha is read and the maftir is 28:9–15.

to enter into the covenant of your God יהוה, which your God יהוה is concluding with you this day, with its sanctions;
in order to establish you this day as God’s people and in order to be your God, as promised you and as sworn to your fathers Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
I make this covenant, with its sanctions, not with you alone,
but both with those who are standing here with us this day before our God יהוה and with those who are not with us here this day.
Well you know that we dwelt in the land of Egypt and that we passed through the midst of various other nations;
and you have seen the detestable things and the fetishes of wood and stone, silver and gold, that they keep.
Perchance there is among you some man or woman, or some clan or tribe, whose heart is even now turning away from our God יהוה to go and worship the gods of those nations—perchance there is among you a stock sprouting poison weed and wormwood.
When hearing the words of these sanctions, they may imagine a special immunity, thinking, “I shall be safe, though I follow my own willful heart”—to the utter ruin of moist and dry alike.
יהוה will never forgive that party. Rather, יהוה’s anger and passion will rage against them, till every sanction recorded in this book comes down upon them, and יהוה blots out their name from under heaven.
[As for such a clan or tribe,] יהוה will single it out from all the tribes of Israel for misfortune, in accordance with all the sanctions of the covenant recorded in this book of Teaching.
And later generations will ask—the children who succeed you, and foreigners who come from distant lands and see the plagues and diseases that יהוה has inflicted upon that land,
all its soil devastated by sulfur and salt, beyond sowing and producing, no grass growing in it, just like the upheaval of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, which יהוה overthrew in fierce anger—
all nations will ask, “Why did יהוה do thus to this land? Wherefore that awful wrath?”
They will be told, “Because they forsook the covenant that יהוה, God of their ancestors, made with them upon freeing them from the land of Egypt;
they turned to the service of other gods and worshiped them, gods whom they had not experienced and whom [God] had not allotted to them.
So יהוה was incensed at that land and brought upon it all the curses recorded in this book.
יהוה uprooted them from their soil in anger, fury, and great wrath, and cast them into another land, as is still the case.”
Concealed acts concern our God יהוה; but with overt acts, it is for us and our children ever to apply all the provisions of this Teaching.

The regular haftarah for Ki Tavo, read in other years:
Arise, shine, for your light has dawned;
The Presence of the LORD has shone upon you!
Behold! Darkness shall cover the earth,
And thick clouds the peoples;
But upon you the LORD will shine,
And His Presence be seen over you.
And nations shall walk by your light,
Kings, by your shining radiance.
Raise your eyes and look about:
They have all gathered and come to you.
Your sons shall be brought from afar,
Your daughters like babes on shoulders.
As you behold, you will glow;
Your heart will throb and thrill—
For the wealth of the sea shall pass on to you,
The riches of nations shall flow to you.
Dust clouds of camels shall cover you,
Dromedaries of Midian and Ephah.
They all shall come from Sheba;
They shall bear gold and frankincense,
And shall herald the glories of the LORD.
All the flocks of Kedar shall be assembled for you,
The rams of Nebaioth shall serve your needs;
They shall be welcome offerings on My altar,
And I will add glory to My glorious House.
Who are these that float like a cloud,
Like doves to their cotes?
Behold, the coastlands await me,
With ships of Tarshish in the lead,
To bring your sons from afar,
And their silver and gold as well—
For the name of the LORD your God,
For the Holy One of Israel, who has glorified you.
Aliens shall rebuild your walls,
Their kings shall wait upon you—
For in anger I struck you down,
But in favor I take you back.
Your gates shall always stay open—
Day and night they shall never be shut—
To let in the wealth of the nations,
With their kings in procession.
For the nation or the kingdom
That does not serve you shall perish;
Such nations shall be destroyed.
The majesty of Lebanon shall come to you—
Cypress and pine and box—
To adorn the site of My Sanctuary,
To glorify the place where My feet rest.
Bowing before you, shall come
The children of those who tormented you;
Prostrate at the soles of your feet
Shall be all those who reviled you;
And you shall be called
“City of the LORD,
Zion of the Holy One of Israel.”
Whereas you have been forsaken,
Rejected, with none passing through,
I will make you a pride everlasting,
A joy for age after age.
You shall suck the milk of the nations,
Suckle at royal breasts.
And you shall know
That I the LORD am your Savior,
I, The Mighty One of Jacob, am your Redeemer.
Instead of copper I will bring gold,
Instead of iron I will bring silver;
Instead of wood, copper;
And instead of stone, iron.
And I will appoint Well-being as your government,
Prosperity as your officials.
The cry “Violence!”
Shall no more be heard in your land,
Nor “Wrack and ruin!”
Within your borders.
And you shall name your walls “Victory”
And your gates “Renown.”
No longer shall you need the sun
For light by day,
Nor the shining of the moon
For radiance [by night];
For the LORD shall be your light everlasting,
Your God shall be your glory.
Your sun shall set no more,
Your moon no more withdraw;
For the LORD shall be a light to you forever,
And your days of mourning shall be ended.
And your people, all of them righteous,
Shall possess the land for all time;
They are the shoot that I planted,
My handiwork in which I glory.
The smallest shall become a clan;
The least, a mighty nation.
I the LORD will speed it in due time.

When Israel enters the land, each farmer brings the first fruits to the sanctuary in a basket and recites a declaration that begins "My father was a wandering Aramean," recalling the descent to Egypt, slavery, the Exodus and the gift of the land. Every third year, after giving the tithes to the Levite, stranger, orphan and widow, one declares that the tithes have been given as commanded. Moses tells Israel that today they have become God's people. After crossing the Jordan, they are to set up large stones coated with plaster and inscribe the Torah on them, and the Levites proclaim a series of curses at Mount Ebal, to which the people answer Amen. The blessings for faithfulness follow, then a long and severe warning of what will come if Israel abandons the covenant. Moses reminds them of the wonders they have seen in the wilderness.
And you shall enjoy, together with the [family of the] Levite and the stranger in your midst, all the bounty that your God יהוה has bestowed upon you and your household.
