Parashat Lech Lecha: Abraham’s Journey

God calls Abram to leave his land and his father's house for a land God will show him. A journey of faith begins, and with it the covenant between God and Abraham's descendants.

Read Parashat Lech-Lecha

Genesis 12:1–17:27, with the seven aliyot and maftir.

יהוה said to Abram, “Go forth from your native land and from your father’s house to the land that I will show you.

I will make of you a great nation,
And I will bless you;
I will make your name great,
And you shall be a blessing.

Yo haré de ti una gran nación. Te bendeciré y engrandeceré tu nombre, y serás bendición.

I will bless those who bless you
And curse the one who curses you;
And all the families of the earth
Shall bless themselves by you.”

Abram went forth as יהוה had commanded him, and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he left Haran.

Abram took his wife Sarai and his brother’s son Lot, and all the wealth that they had amassed, and the persons that they had acquired in Haran; and they set out for the land of Canaan. When they arrived in the land of Canaan,

Abram passed through the land as far as the site of Shechem, at the terebinth of Moreh. The Canaanites were then in the land.

יהוה appeared to Abram and said, “I will assign this land to your offspring.” And he built an altar there to יהוה who had appeared to him.

From there he moved on to the hill country east of Bethel and pitched his tent, with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east; and he built there an altar to יהוה and invoked יהוה by name.

Then Abram journeyed by stages toward the Negeb.

Iba avanzando Avram en dirección al Néguev.

There was a famine in the land, and Abram went down to Egypt to sojourn there, for the famine was severe in the land.

As he was about to enter Egypt, he said to his wife Sarai, “I know what a beautiful woman you are.

If the Egyptians see you, and think, ‘She is his wife,’ they will kill me and let you live.

Please say that you are my sister, that it may go well with me because of you, and that I may remain alive thanks to you.”

When Abram entered Egypt, the Egyptians saw how very beautiful the woman was.

Pharaoh’s courtiers saw her and praised her to Pharaoh, and the woman was taken into Pharaoh’s palace.

And because of her, it went well with Abram; he acquired sheep, oxen, asses, male and female slaves, she-asses, and camels.

But יהוה afflicted Pharaoh and his household with mighty plagues on account of Sarai, the wife of Abram.

Pharaoh sent for Abram and said, “What is this you have done to me! Why did you not tell me that she was your wife?

Why did you say, ‘She is my sister,’ so that I took her as my wife? Now, here is your wife; take her and begone!”

And Pharaoh put agents in charge of him, and they sent him off with his wife and all that he possessed.

From Egypt, Abram went up into the Negeb, with his wife and all that he possessed, together with Lot.

Now Abram was very rich in cattle, silver, and gold.

And he proceeded by stages from the Negeb as far as Bethel, to the place where his tent had been formerly, between Bethel and Ai,

the site of the altar that he had built there at first; and there Abram invoked יהוה by name.

Lot, who went with Abram, also had flocks and herds and tents,

so that the land could not support them staying together; for their possessions were so great that they could not remain together.

And there was quarreling between the herders of Abram’s cattle and those of Lot’s cattle.—The Canaanites and Perizzites were then dwelling in the land.—

Abram said to Lot, “Let there be no strife between you and me, between my herders and yours, for we are kin.

Is not the whole land before you? Let us separate: if you go north, I will go south; and if you go south, I will go north.”

Lot looked about him and saw how well watered was the whole plain of the Jordan, all of it—this was before יהוה had destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah—all the way to Zoar, like the garden of יהוה, like the land of Egypt.

So Lot chose for himself the whole plain of the Jordan, and Lot journeyed eastward. Thus they parted from each other;

Abram remained in the land of Canaan, while Lot settled in the cities of the Plain, pitching his tents near Sodom.

Now the inhabitants of Sodom were very wicked sinners against יהוה.

And יהוה said to Abram, after Lot had parted from him, “Raise your eyes and look out from where you are, to the north and south, to the east and west,

for I give all the land that you see to you and your offspring forever.

I will make your offspring as the dust of the earth, so that if one can count the dust of the earth, then your offspring too can be counted.

Up, walk about the land, through its length and its breadth, for I give it to you.”

And Abram moved his tent, and came to dwell at the terebinths of Mamre, which are in Hebron; and he built an altar there to יהוה.

all the latter joined forces at the Valley of Siddim, now the Dead Sea.

On their way back they came to En-mishpat, which is Kadesh, and subdued all the territory of the Amalekites, and also the Amorites who dwelt in Hazazon-tamar.

Then the king of Sodom, the king of Gomorrah, the king of Admah, the king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela, which is Zoar, went forth and engaged them in battle in the Valley of Siddim:

Now the Valley of Siddim was dotted with bitumen pits; and the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah, in their flight, threw themselves into them, while the rest escaped to the hill country.

They also took Lot, the son of Abram’s brother, and his possessions, and departed; for he had settled in Sodom.

A fugitive brought the news to Abram the Hebrew, who was dwelling at the terebinths of Mamre the Amorite, kinsman of Eshkol and Aner, these being Abram’s allies.

When Abram heard that his kinsman’s [household] had been taken captive, he mustered his retainers, born into his household, numbering three hundred and eighteen, and went in pursuit as far as Dan.

At night, he and his servants deployed against them and defeated them; and he pursued them as far as Hobah, which is north of Damascus.

He brought back all the possessions; he also brought back his kinsman Lot and his possessions, and the women and the rest of the people.

When he returned from defeating Chedorlaomer and the kings with him, the king of Sodom came out to meet him in the Valley of Shaveh, which is the Valley of the King.

Some time later, the word of יהוה came to Abram in a vision:
“Fear not, Abram,
I am a shield to you;
Your reward shall be very great.”

But Abram said, “O lord יהוה, what can You give me, seeing that I shall die childless, and the one in charge of my household is Dammesek Eliezer!”

Dijo Avram: «Hashem Elohim, ¿qué me vas a dar?

Abram said further, “Since You have granted me no offspring, my steward will be my heir.”

Dijo Avram: «Ya que no me has dado descendencia, he aquí que me heredará un criado de mi casa.»

The word of יהוה came to him in reply, “That one shall not be your heir; none but your very own issue shall be your heir.”

[Then in the vision, God] took him outside and said, “Look toward heaven and count the stars, if you are able to count them”—continuing, “So shall your offspring be.”

And he put his trust in יהוה, who reckoned it to his merit.

Then [God] said to him, “I am יהוה who brought you out from Ur of the Chaldeans to assign this land to you as a possession.”

Came the reply, “Bring Me a three-year-old heifer, a three-year-old she-goat, a three-year-old ram, a turtledove, and a young bird.”

As the sun was about to set, a deep sleep fell upon Abram, and a great dark dread descended upon him.

When the sun set and it was very dark, there appeared a smoking oven, and a flaming torch which passed between those pieces.

On that day יהוה made a covenant with Abram: “To your offspring I assign this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates—

emoritas, cananeos, girgashitas y jebuseos.»

Sarai, Abram’s wife, had borne him no children. She had an Egyptian maidservant whose name was Hagar.

And Sarai said to Abram, “Look, יהוה has kept me from bearing. Consort with my maid; perhaps I shall have a child through her.” And Abram heeded Sarai’s request.

So Sarai, Abram’s wife, took her maid, Hagar the Egyptian—after Abram had dwelt in the land of Canaan ten years—and gave her to her husband Abram as concubine.

He cohabited with Hagar and she conceived; and when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was lowered in her esteem.

And Sarai said to Abram, “The wrong done me is your fault! I myself put my maid in your bosom; now that she sees that she is pregnant, I am lowered in her esteem. יהוה decide between you and me!”

Abram said to Sarai, “Your maid is in your hands. Deal with her as you think right.” Then Sarai treated her harshly, and she ran away from her.

A messenger of יהוה found her by a spring of water in the wilderness, the spring on the road to Shur,

and said, “Hagar, slave of Sarai, where have you come from, and where are you going?” And she said, “I am running away from my mistress Sarai.”

And the messenger of יהוה said to her, “Go back to your mistress, and submit to her harsh treatment.”

And the messenger of יהוה said to her,
“I will greatly increase your offspring,
And they shall be too many to count.”

The messenger of יהוה said to her further,
“Behold, you are pregnant
And shall bear a son;
You shall call him Ishmael,
For יהוה has paid heed to your suffering.

Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to Abram.

God further said to Abraham, “As for you, you and your offspring to come throughout the ages shall keep My covenant.

And God said to Abraham, “As for your wife Sarai, you shall not call her Sarai, but her name shall be Sarah.

Abraham threw himself on his face and laughed, as he said to himself, “Can a child be born to a man a hundred years old, or can Sarah bear a child at ninety?”

And Abraham said to God, “O that Ishmael might live by Your favor!”

Avraham dijo a Elohim: Ojalá Ishmael viva en Tu presencia.

God said, “Nevertheless, Sarah your wife shall bear you a son, and you shall name him Isaac; and I will maintain My covenant with him as an everlasting covenant for his offspring to come.

As for Ishmael, I have heeded you. I hereby bless him. I will make him fertile and exceedingly numerous. He shall be the father of twelve chieftains, and I will make of him a great nation.

יהוה appeared to him by the terebinths of Mamre; he was sitting at the entrance of the tent as the day grew hot.

Looking up, he saw three figures standing near him. Perceiving this, he ran from the entrance of the tent to greet them and, bowing to the ground,

he said, “My lords! If it please you, do not go on past your servant.

Let a little water be brought; bathe your feet and recline under the tree.

And let me fetch a morsel of bread that you may refresh yourselves; then go on—seeing that you have come your servant’s way.” They replied, “Do as you have said.”

Abraham hastened into the tent to Sarah, and said, “Quick, three seahs of choice flour! Knead and make cakes!”

Then Abraham ran to the herd, took a calf, tender and choice, and gave it to a servant-boy, who hastened to prepare it.

He took curds and milk and the calf that had been prepared and set these before them; and he waited on them under the tree as they ate.

They said to him, “Where is your wife Sarah?” And he replied, “There, in the tent.”

Then one said, “I will return to you next year, and your wife Sarah shall have a son!” Sarah was listening at the entrance of the tent, which was behind him.

Now Abraham and Sarah were old, advanced in years; Sarah had stopped having her periods.

And Sarah laughed to herself, saying, “Now that I’ve lost the ability, am I to have enjoyment—with my husband so old?”

Then יהוה said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh, saying, ‘Shall I in truth bear a child, old as I am?’

Hashem dijo a Avraham: «¿Por qué se rio Sará diciendo: ¿Realmente daré a luz ahora que soy tan vieja?

Is anything too wondrous for יהוה ? I will return to you at the same season next year, and Sarah shall have a son.”

Why do you say, O Jacob,
Why declare, O Israel,
“My way is hid from the LORD,
My cause is ignored by my God”?

Do you not know?
Have you not heard?
The LORD is God from of old,
Creator of the earth from end to end,
He never grows faint or weary,
His wisdom cannot be fathomed.

¿No lo has sabido?

He gives strength to the weary,
Fresh vigor to the spent.

Youths may grow faint and weary,
And young men stumble and fall;

But they who trust in the LORD shall renew their strength
As eagles grow new plumes:
They shall run and not grow weary,
They shall march and not grow faint.

Stand silent before Me, coastlands,
And let nations renew their strength.
Let them approach to state their case;
Let us come forward together for argument.

Who has roused a victor from the East,
Summoned him to His service?
Has delivered up nations to him,
And trodden sovereigns down?
Has rendered their swords like dust,
Their bows like wind-blown straw?

He pursues them, he goes on unscathed;
No shackle is placed on his feet.

Who has wrought and achieved this?
He who announced the generations from the start—
I, the LORD, who was first
And will be with the last as well.

The coastlands look on in fear,
The ends of earth tremble.

They draw near and come;

Each one helps the other,
Saying to his fellow, “Take courage!”

The woodworker encourages the smith;
He who flattens with the hammer
[Encourages] him who pounds the anvil.
He says of the riveting, “It is good!”
And he fixes it with nails,
That it may not topple.

But you, Israel, My servant,
Jacob, whom I have chosen,
Seed of Abraham My friend—

You whom I drew from the ends of the earth
And called from its far corners,
To whom I said: You are My servant;
I chose you, I have not rejected you—

Fear not, for I am with you,
Be not frightened, for I am your God;
I strengthen you and I help you,
I uphold you with My victorious right hand.

Shamed and chagrined shall be
All who contend with you;
They who strive with you
Shall become as naught and shall perish.

You may seek, but shall not find
Those who struggle with you;
Less than nothing shall be
The men who battle against you.

For I the LORD am your God,
Who grasped your right hand,
Who say to you: Have no fear;
I will be your help.

Fear not, O worm Jacob,
O men of Israel:
I will help you
—declares the LORD—
I your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel.

I will make of you a threshing board,
A new thresher, with many spikes;
You shall thresh mountains to dust,
And make hills like chaff.

You shall winnow them
And the wind shall carry them off;
The whirlwind shall scatter them.
But you shall rejoice in the LORD,
And glory in the Holy One of Israel.

About Parashat Lech-Lecha

God tells Abram to go to the land of Canaan, promising to make him a great nation through which all families of the earth will be blessed. A famine drives Abram and Sarai to Egypt, where Pharaoh takes Sarai until plagues force him to return her. Back in Canaan, Abram and his nephew Lot separate, and Lot settles near Sodom. When Lot is captured in a war between kings, Abram rescues him and is blessed by Malki-tzedek, king of Shalem. In the covenant between the pieces, God promises Abram the land and foretells that his descendants will be strangers in a foreign land for four hundred years. Sarai gives Abram her maidservant Hagar, who bears Ishmael. At ninety-nine, Abram becomes Abraham and Sarai becomes Sarah. God commands circumcision as the sign of the covenant and promises that Sarah will bear a son, Isaac.
