This is the story of Isaac, son of Abraham. Abraham begot Isaac.

Isaac was forty years old when he took to wife Rebekah, daughter of Bethuel the Aramean of Paddan-aram, sister of Laban the Aramean.

Isaac pleaded with יהוה on behalf of his wife, because she was barren; and יהוה responded to his plea, and his wife Rebekah conceived.

But the children struggled in her womb, and she said, “If so, why do I exist?” She went to inquire of יהוה,

and יהוה answered her,
“Two nations are in your womb,
Two separate peoples shall issue from your body;
One people shall be mightier than the other,
And the older shall serve the younger.”

When her time to give birth was at hand, there were twins in her womb.

The first one emerged red, like a hairy mantle all over; so they named him Esau.

Then his brother emerged, holding on to the heel of Esau; so they named him Jacob. Isaac was sixty years old when they were born.

When the boys grew up, Esau became a skillful hunter, a man of the outdoors; but Jacob became a mild man, raising livestock.

Isaac favored Esau because he had a taste for game; but Rebekah favored Jacob.

Once when Jacob was cooking a stew, Esau came in from the open, famished.

And Esau said to Jacob, “Give me some of that red stuff to gulp down, for I am famished”—which is why he was named Edom.

Jacob said, “First sell me your birthright.”

E Iaacov respondió: –Véndeme primero tu primogenitura.

And Esau said, “I am at the point of death, so of what use is my birthright to me?”

But Jacob said, “Swear to me first.” So he swore to him, and sold his birthright to Jacob.

Jacob then gave Esau bread and lentil stew; he ate and drank, and he rose and went away. Thus did Esau spurn the birthright.

There was a famine in the land—aside from the previous famine that had occurred in the days of Abraham—and Isaac went to Abimelech, king of the Philistines, in Gerar.

יהוה had appeared to him and said, “Do not go down to Egypt; stay in the land which I point out to you.

Reside in this land, and I will be with you and bless you; I will assign all these lands to you and to your heirs, fulfilling the oath that I swore to your father Abraham.

I will make your heirs as numerous as the stars of heaven, and assign to your heirs all these lands, so that all the nations of the earth shall bless themselves by your heirs—

inasmuch as Abraham obeyed Me and kept My charge: My commandments, My laws, and My teachings.”

porque Avraham obedeció mi voz y guardó mi ordenanza, mis mandamientos, mis estatutos y mis instrucciones.

So Isaac stayed in Gerar.

Habitó, pues, Itzjac en Gerar.

When the local leaders asked him about his wife, he said, “She is my sister,” for he was afraid to say “my wife,” thinking, “The local leaders might kill me on account of Rebekah, for she is beautiful.”

When some time had passed, Abimelech king of the Philistines, looking out of the window, saw Isaac fondling his wife Rebekah.

Abimelech sent for Isaac and said, “So she is your wife! Why then did you say: ‘She is my sister’?” Isaac said to him, “Because I thought I might lose my life on account of her.”

Abimelech said, “What have you done to us! One of the men might have lain with your wife, and you would have brought guilt upon us.”

Abimelech then charged all the people, saying, “Anyone who molests this man or his wife shall be put to death.”

Isaac sowed in that land and reaped a hundredfold the same year. יהוה blessed him,

and the man grew richer and richer until he was very wealthy:

he acquired flocks and herds, and a large household, so that the Philistines envied him.

And the Philistines stopped up all the wells which his father’s servants had dug in the days of his father Abraham, filling them with earth.

And Abimelech said to Isaac, “Go away from us, for you have become far too big for us.”

So Isaac departed from there and encamped in the wadi of Gerar, where he settled.

Isaac dug anew the wells which had been dug in the days of his father Abraham and which the Philistines had stopped up after Abraham’s death; and he gave them the same names that his father had given them.

But when Isaac’s servants, digging in the wadi, found there a well of spring water,

the herdsmen of Gerar quarreled with Isaac’s herdsmen, saying, “The water is ours.” He named that well Esek, because they contended with him.

And when they dug another well, they disputed over that one also; so he named it Sitnah.

He moved from there and dug yet another well, and they did not quarrel over it; so he called it Rehoboth, saying, “Now at last יהוה has granted us ample space to increase in the land.”

Revi’i26:23–29

From there he went up to Beer-sheba.

De allí fue a Beer Sheva.

That night יהוה appeared to him and said, “I am the God of your father Abraham’s [house]. Fear not, for I am with you, and I will bless you and increase your offspring for the sake of My servant Abraham.”

So he built an altar there and invoked יהוה by name. Isaac pitched his tent there and his servants started digging a well.

And Abimelech came to him from Gerar, with Ahuzzath his councilor and Phicol chief of his troops.

Isaac said to them, “Why have you come to me, seeing that you have been hostile to me and have driven me away from you?”

And they said, “We now see plainly that יהוה has been with you, and we thought: Let there be a sworn treaty between our two parties, between you and us. Let us make a pact with you

that you will not do us harm, just as we have not molested you but have always dealt kindly with you and sent you away in peace. From now on, be you blessed of יהוה!”

Early in the morning, they exchanged oaths. Isaac then bade them farewell, and they departed from him in peace.

When Isaac was old and his eyes were too dim to see, he called his older son Esau and said to him, “My son.” He answered, “Here I am.”

And he said, “I am old now, and I do not know how soon I may die.

Y él dijo: —Mira, yo ya estoy viejo y no sé el día de mi muerte.

Then prepare a dish for me such as I like, and bring it to me to eat, so that I may give you my innermost blessing before I die.”

Rebekah had been listening as Isaac spoke to his son Esau. When Esau had gone out into the open to hunt game to bring home,

Rebekah said to her son Jacob, “I overheard your father speaking to your brother Esau, saying,

Rivká habló a su hijo Iaacov, diciendo: —Mira, he oído a tu padre hablando con tu hermano Esav, diciendo:

‘Bring me some game and prepare a dish for me to eat, that I may bless you, with יהוה’s approval, before I die.’

Now, my son, listen carefully as I instruct you.

Go to the flock and fetch me two choice kids, and I will make of them a dish for your father, such as he likes.

Then take it to your father to eat, in order that he may bless you before he dies.”

Jacob answered his mother Rebekah, “But my brother Esau is a hairy man and I am smooth-skinned.

If my father touches me, I shall appear to him as a trickster and bring upon myself a curse, not a blessing.”

But his mother said to him, “Your curse, my son, be upon me! Just do as I say and go fetch them for me.”

He got them and brought them to his mother, and his mother prepared a dish such as his father liked.

Rebekah then took the best clothes of her older son Esau, which were there in the house, and had her younger son Jacob put them on;

and she covered his hands and the hairless part of his neck with the skins of the kids.

Then she put in the hands of her son Jacob the dish and the bread that she had prepared.

He went to his father and said, “Father.” And he said, “Yes, which of my sons are you?”

Y él fue a su padre y dijo: —Padre mío. Y él respondió: —Estoy aquí. ¿Quién eres, hijo mío?

Jacob said to his father, “I am Esau, your first-born; I have done as you told me. Pray sit up and eat of my game, that you may give me your innermost blessing.”

Iaacov respondió a su padre: —Soy Esav tu primogénito. He hecho como me dijiste.

Isaac said to his son, “How did you succeed so quickly, my son?” And he said, “Because your God יהוה granted me good fortune.”

Isaac said to Jacob, “Come closer that I may feel you, my son—whether you are really my son Esau or not.”

So Jacob drew close to his father Isaac, who felt him and wondered. “The voice is the voice of Jacob, yet the hands are the hands of Esau.”

He did not recognize him, because his hands were hairy like those of his brother Esau; and so he blessed him.

He asked, “Are you really my son Esau?” And when he said, “I am,”

Y dijo: —¿Eres tú mi hijo Esav? Y él respondió: —Yo soy.

he said, “Serve me and let me eat of my son’s game that I may give you my innermost blessing.” So he served him and he ate, and he brought him wine and he drank.

Then his father Isaac said to him, “Come close and kiss me, my son”;

and he went up and kissed him. And he smelled his clothes and he blessed him, saying, “Ah, the smell of my son is like the smell of the fields that יהוה has blessed.

No sooner had Jacob left the presence of his father Isaac—after Isaac had finished blessing Jacob—than his brother Esau came back from his hunt.

He too prepared a dish and brought it to his father. And he said to his father, “Let my father sit up and eat of his son’s game, so that you may give me your innermost blessing.”

His father Isaac said to him, “Who are you?” And he said, “I am your son, Esau, your first-born!”

Isaac was seized with very violent trembling. “Who was it then,” he demanded, “that hunted game and brought it to me? Moreover, I ate of it before you came, and I blessed him; now he must remain blessed!”

When Esau heard his father’s words, he burst into wild and bitter sobbing, and said to his father, “Bless me too, Father!”

But he answered, “Your brother came with guile and took away your blessing.”

Y él dijo: —Tu hermano vino con engaño y tomó tu bendición.

[Esau] said, “Was he, then, named Jacob that he might supplant me these two times? First he took away my birthright and now he has taken away my blessing!” And he added, “Have you not reserved a blessing for me?”

Isaac answered, saying to Esau, “But I have made him master over you: I have given him all his brothers for servants, and sustained him with grain and wine. What, then, can I still do for you, my son?”

Itzjac respondió y dijo a Esav: —Mira, lo he establecido como señor tuyo, y le he dado por servidores a todos sus hermanos. Le he provisto de grano y vino. ¿Qué haré por ti, hijo mío?

And Esau said to his father, “Have you but one blessing, Father? Bless me too, Father!” And Esau wept aloud.

And his father Isaac answered, saying to him,
“See, your abode shall enjoy the fat of the earth
And the dew of heaven above.

Yet by your sword you shall live,
And you shall serve your brother;
But when you grow restive,
You shall break his yoke from your neck.”

Now Esau harbored a grudge against Jacob because of the blessing which his father had given him, and Esau said to himself, “Let but the mourning period of my father come, and I will kill my brother Jacob.”

When the words of her older son Esau were reported to Rebekah, she sent for her younger son Jacob and said to him, “Your brother Esau is consoling himself by planning to kill you.

Now, my son, listen to me. Flee at once to Haran, to my brother Laban.

Ahora pues, hijo mío, obedéceme: Levántate y huye a mi hermano Laván (Labán), en Jarán (Harán).

until your brother’s anger against you subsides—and he forgets what you have done to him. Then I will fetch you from there. Let me not lose you both in one day!”

Rebekah said to Isaac, “I am disgusted with my life because of the Hittite women. If Jacob marries a Hittite woman like these, from among the native women, what good will life be to me?”

So Isaac sent for Jacob and blessed him. He instructed him, saying, “You shall not take a wife from among the Canaanite women.

Up, go to Paddan-aram, to the house of Bethuel, your mother’s father, and take a wife there from among the daughters of Laban, your mother’s brother.

May El Shaddai bless you, make you fertile and numerous, so that you become an assembly of peoples.

Then Isaac sent Jacob off, and he went to Paddan-aram, to Laban the son of Bethuel the Aramean, the brother of Rebekah, mother of Jacob and Esau.

When Esau saw that Isaac had blessed Jacob and sent him off to Paddan-aram to take a wife from there, charging him, as he blessed him, “You shall not take a wife from among the Canaanite women,”

and that Jacob had obeyed his father and mother and gone to Paddan-aram,

Esau realized that the Canaanite women displeased his father Isaac.

So Esau went to Ishmael and took to wife, in addition to the wives he had, Mahalath the daughter of Ishmael son of Abraham, sister of Nebaioth.

יהוה spoke to Moses, saying:

El Eterno habló a Moshé diciendo:

Command the Israelite people and say to them: Be punctilious in presenting to Me at stated times the offerings of food due Me, as offerings by fire of pleasing odor to Me.

Say to them: These are the offerings by fire that you are to present to יהוה: As a regular burnt offering every day, two yearling lambs without blemish.

the regular burnt offering instituted at Mount Sinai —an offering by fire of pleasing odor to יהוה.

The libation with it shall be a quarter of a hin for each lamb, to be poured in the sacred precinct as an offering of fermented drink to יהוה.

The other lamb you shall offer at twilight, preparing the same meal offering and libation as in the morning—an offering by fire of pleasing odor to יהוה.

On the sabbath day: two yearling lambs without blemish, together with two-tenths of a measure of choice flour with oil mixed in as a meal offering, and with the proper libation—

On your new moons you shall present a burnt offering to יהוה: two bulls of the herd, one ram, and seven yearling lambs, without blemish.

As meal offering for each lamb: a tenth of a measure of fine flour with oil mixed in. Such shall be the burnt offering of pleasing odor, an offering by fire to יהוה.

Their libations shall be: half a hin of wine for a bull, a third of a hin for a ram, and a quarter of a hin for a lamb. That shall be the monthly burnt offering for each new moon of the year.

And there shall be one goat as a sin offering to יהוה, to be offered in addition to the regular burnt offering and its libation.

On Rosh Hodesh Tevet during Hanukkah, these verses are read in three aliyot (Kohen 1–5, Levi 6–10, Yisrael 11–15) and Revi’i reads from the Hanukkah portion. On Shabbat Rosh Hodesh, the weekly parasha is read and the maftir is 28:9–15.

Jacob left Beer-sheba, and set out for Haran.

He came upon a certain place and stopped there for the night, for the sun had set. Taking one of the stones of that place, he put it under his head and lay down in that place.

He had a dream; a stairway was set on the ground and its top reached to the sky, and messengers of God were going up and down on it.

And standing beside him was יהוה, who said, “I am יהוה, the God of your father Abraham’s [house] and the God of Isaac’s [house]: the ground on which you are lying I will assign to you and to your offspring.

Your descendants shall be as the dust of the earth; you shall spread out to the west and to the east, to the north and to the south. All the families of the earth shall bless themselves by you and your descendants.

Remember, I am with you: I will protect you wherever you go and will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.”

Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, “Surely יהוה is present in this place, and I did not know it!”

Shaken, he said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the abode of God, and that is the gateway to heaven.”

Early in the morning, Jacob took the stone that he had put under his head and set it up as a pillar and poured oil on the top of it.

He named that site Bethel; but previously the name of the city had been Luz.

Jacob then made a vow, saying, “If God remains with me, protecting me on this journey that I am making, and giving me bread to eat and clothing to wear,

and I return safe to my father’s house— יהוה shall be my God.

And this stone, which I have set up as a pillar, shall be God’s abode; and of all that You give me, I will set aside a tithe for You.”

A pronouncement: The word of the LORD to Israel through Malachi.

I have shown you love, said the LORD. But you ask, “How have You shown us love?” After all—declares the LORD—Esau is Jacob’s brother; yet I have accepted Jacob

«Yo los he amado», ha dicho Hashem. Pero ustedes responden: «¿En qué nos has amado?»

and have rejected Esau. I have made his hills a desolation, his territory a home for beasts of the desert.

«y aborrecí a Esav.

If Edom thinks, “Though crushed, we can build the ruins again,” thus said the LORD of Hosts: They may build, but I will tear down. And so they shall be known as the region of wickedness, the people damned forever of the LORD.

A son should honor his father, and a slave his master. Now if I am a father, where is the honor due Me? And if I am a master, where is the reverence due Me?—said the LORD of Hosts to you, O priests who scorn My name. But you ask, “How have we scorned Your name?”

When you present a blind animal for sacrifice—it doesn’t matter! When you present a lame or sick one—it doesn’t matter! Just offer it to your governor: Will he accept you? Will he show you favor?—said the LORD of Hosts.

¡Preséntalo a tu gobernador!

And now implore the favor of God! Will He be gracious to us? This is what you have done—will He accept any of you?
The LORD of Hosts has said:

If only you would lock My doors, and not kindle fire on My altar to no purpose! I take no pleasure in you—said the LORD of Hosts—and I will accept no offering from you.

For from where the sun rises to where it sets, My name is honored among the nations, and everywhere incense and pure oblation are offered to My name; for My name is honored among the nations—said the LORD of Hosts.

But you profane it when you say, “The table of the Lord is defiled and the meat, the food, can be treated with scorn.”

You say, “Oh, what a bother!” And so you degrade it—said the LORD of Hosts—and you bring the stolen, the lame, and the sick; and you offer such as an oblation. Will I accept it from you?—said the LORD.

A curse on the cheat who has an [unblemished] male in his flock, but for his vow sacrifices a blemished animal to the Lord! For I am a great King—said the LORD of Hosts—and My name is revered among the nations.

And now, O priests, this charge is for you:

Unless you obey and unless you lay it to heart, and do honor to My name—said the LORD of Hosts—I will send a curse and turn your blessings into curses. (Indeed, I have turned them into curses, because you do not lay it to heart.)

I will put your seed under a ban, and I will strew dung upon your faces, the dung of your festal sacrifices, and you shall be carried out to its [heap].

Know, then, that I have sent this charge to you that My covenant with Levi may endure—said the LORD of Hosts.

I had with him a covenant of life and well-being, which I gave to him, and of reverence, which he showed Me. For he stood in awe of My name.

Proper rulings were in his mouth,
And nothing perverse was on his lips;
He served Me with complete loyalty
And held the many back from iniquity.

For the lips of a priest guard knowledge,
And men seek rulings from his mouth;
For he is a messenger of the LORD of Hosts.

About Parashat Toldot

After twenty years without children, Rebecca conceives twins who struggle within her; God tells her that two nations are in her womb and the elder will serve the younger. Esau becomes a hunter, loved by Isaac, and Jacob a quiet dweller in tents, loved by Rebecca. Exhausted from the field, Esau sells his birthright to Jacob for a bowl of lentil stew. During a famine, Isaac settles in Gerar, where God renews Abraham's covenant with him; he reopens his father's wells and digs new ones until he finds room at Rehovot. In his old age, nearly blind, Isaac asks Esau to prepare a meal so he can bless him. Rebecca has Jacob go in disguised as Esau. "The voice is the voice of Jacob, but the hands are the hands of Esau," Isaac says, and he blesses Jacob. Esau vows revenge, and Jacob is sent to Rebecca's brother Laban in Haran.

So Jacob drew close to his father Isaac, who felt him and wondered. “The voice is the voice of Jacob, yet the hands are the hands of Esau.”
