Purim Machatzit HaShekel

Purim Machatzit HaShekel, often referred to simply as Machatzit HaShekel, is a traditional Jewish custom observed on the holiday of Purim. The practice involves donating half a shekel, symbolizing the biblical commandment found in Exodus 30:13-15. According to tradition, this donation serves as a reminder of the half shekel each Israelite contributed to the construction of the Tabernacle in ancient times. The funds collected through Machatzit HaShekel are typically given to charitable causes, particularly to assist those in need within the Jewish community. This custom is often performed in synagogues or communal settings, where individuals contribute their donation during the weeks leading up to Purim. By participating in Machatzit HaShekel, Jews fulfill a spiritual obligation while also supporting the less fortunate, reinforcing themes of charity and unity inherent in the celebration of Purim.
