Jethro priest of Midian, Moses’ father-in-law, heard all that God had done for Moses and for Israel, God’s people, how יהוה had brought Israel out from Egypt.

So Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, took Zipporah, Moses’ wife, after she had been sent home,

E Itró, suegro de Moshé, tomó a Tziporá, la mujer de Moshé, a quien este había enviado;

and her two sons—of whom one was named Gershom, that is to say, “I have been a stranger in a foreign land”;

and the other was named Eliezer, meaning, “The God of my father’s [house] was my help, delivering me from the sword of Pharaoh.”

Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, brought Moses’ sons and wife to him in the wilderness, where he was encamped at the mountain of God.

He sent word to Moses, “I, your father-in-law Jethro, am coming to you, with your wife and her two sons.”

Moses went out to meet his father-in-law; he bowed low and kissed him; each asked after the other’s welfare, and they went into the tent.

Moses then recounted to his father-in-law everything that יהוה had done to Pharaoh and to the Egyptians for Israel’s sake, all the hardships that had befallen them on the way, and how יהוה had delivered them.

And Jethro rejoiced over all the kindness that יהוה had shown Israel when delivering them from the Egyptians.

“Blessed be יהוה,” Jethro said, “who delivered you from the Egyptians and from Pharaoh, and who delivered the people from under the hand of the Egyptians.

Now I know that יהוה is greater than all gods, yes, by the result of their very schemes against [the people].”

And Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, brought a burnt offering and sacrifices for God; and Aaron came with all the elders of Israel to partake of the meal before God with Moses’ father-in-law.

Next day, Moses sat as magistrate among the people, while the people stood about Moses from morning until evening.

But when Moses’ father-in-law saw how much he had to do for the people, he said, “What is this thing that you are doing to the people? Why do you act alone, while all the people stand about you from morning until evening?”

Moses replied to his father-in-law, “It is because the people come to me to inquire of God.

When they have a dispute, it comes before me, and I decide between one party and another, and I make known the laws and teachings of God.”

But Moses’ father-in-law said to him, “The thing you are doing is not right;

you will surely wear yourself out, and these people as well. For the task is too heavy for you; you cannot do it alone.

Now listen to me. I will give you counsel, and God be with you! You represent the people before God: you bring the disputes before God,

and enjoin upon them the laws and the teachings, and make known to them the way they are to go and the practices they are to follow.

You shall also seek out, from among all the people, capable individuals who fear God—trustworthy ones who spurn ill-gotten gain. Set these over them as chiefs of thousands, hundreds, fifties, and tens, and

Pero selecciona de entre todo el pueblo a hombres capaces, temerosos de Elohim, hombres íntegros que aborrezcan las ganancias deshonestas, y ponlos al frente de ellos como jefes de mil, de cien, de cincuenta y de diez;

let them judge the people at all times. Have them bring every major dispute to you, but let them decide every minor dispute themselves. Make it easier for yourself by letting them share the burden with you.

If you do this—and God so commands you—you will be able to bear up; and all these people too will go home unwearied.”

Moses heeded his father-in-law and did just as he had said.

Moses chose capable individuals out of all Israel, and appointed them heads over the people—chiefs of thousands, hundreds, fifties, and tens;

and they judged the people at all times: the difficult matters they would bring to Moses, and all the minor matters they would decide themselves.

Then Moses bade his father-in-law farewell, and he went his way to his own land.

Revi’i19:1–6

On the third new moon after the Israelites had gone forth from the land of Egypt, on that very day, they entered the wilderness of Sinai.

Having journeyed from Rephidim, they entered the wilderness of Sinai and encamped in the wilderness. Israel encamped there in front of the mountain,

and Moses went up to God. יהוה called to him from the mountain, saying, “Thus shall you say to the house of Jacob and declare to the children of Israel:

‘You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, how I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to Me.

«Ustedes han visto lo que he hecho a los egipcios, y cómo los he levantado sobre alas de águilas y los he traído a mí.»

Now then, if you will obey Me faithfully and keep My covenant, you shall be My treasured possession among all the peoples. Indeed, all the earth is Mine,

but you shall be to Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words that you shall speak to the children of Israel.”

Moses came and summoned the elders of the people and put before them all that יהוה had commanded him.

All those assembled answered as one, saying, “All that יהוה has spoken we will do!” And Moses brought back the people’s words to יהוה.

And יהוה said to Moses, “I will come to you in a thick cloud, in order that the people may hear when I speak with you and so trust you ever after.” Then Moses reported the people’s words to יהוה,

and יהוה said to Moses, “Go to the people and warn them to stay pure today and tomorrow. Let them wash their clothes.

Let them be ready for the third day; for on the third day יהוה will come down, in the sight of all the people, on Mount Sinai.

You shall set bounds for the people round about, saying, ‘Beware of going up the mountain or touching the border of it. Whoever touches the mountain shall be put to death

without being touched—by being either stoned or shot; beast or person, a trespasser shall not live.’ When the ram’s horn sounds a long blast, they may go up on the mountain.”

Moses came down from the mountain to the people and warned the people to stay pure, and they washed their clothes.

And he said to the people, “Be ready for the third day: [the men among] you should not go near a woman.”

On the third day, as morning dawned, there was thunder, and lightning, and a dense cloud upon the mountain, and a very loud blast of the horn; and all the people who were in the camp trembled.

Moses led the people out of the camp toward God, and they took their places at the foot of the mountain.

Now Mount Sinai was all in smoke, for יהוה had come down upon it in fire; the smoke rose like the smoke of a kiln, and the whole mountain trembled violently.

The blare of the horn grew louder and louder. As Moses spoke, God answered him in thunder.

יהוה came down upon Mount Sinai, on the top of the mountain, and יהוה called Moses to the top of the mountain and Moses went up.

יהוה said to Moses, “Go down, warn the people not to break through to יהוה to gaze, lest many of them perish.

The priests also, who come near יהוה, must stay pure, lest יהוה break out against them.”

But Moses said to יהוה, “The people cannot come up to Mount Sinai, for You warned us saying, ‘Set bounds about the mountain and sanctify it.’”

So יהוה said to him, “Go down, and come back together with Aaron; but let not the priests or the people break through to come up to יהוה, lest [God] break out against them.”

And Moses went down to the people and spoke to them.

God spoke all these words, saying:

Y Elohim habló todas estas palabras, diciendo:

I יהוה am your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, the house of bondage:

You shall have no other gods besides Me.

«No tendrás dioses ajenos delante de mí.»

You shall not make for yourself a sculptured image, or any likeness of what is in the heavens above, or on the earth below, or in the waters under the earth.

You shall not bow down to them or serve them. For I your God יהוה am an impassioned God, visiting the guilt of the parents upon the children, upon the third and upon the fourth generations of those who reject Me.

but showing kindness to the thousandth generation of those who love Me and keep My commandments.

You shall not swear falsely by the name of your God יהוה; for יהוה will not clear one who swears falsely by God’s name.

Remember the sabbath day and keep it holy.

«Acuérdate del día del shabbat para santificarlo.»

Six days you shall labor and do all your work,

Seis días trabajarás y harás toda tu obra,

but the seventh day is a sabbath of your God יהוה: you shall not do any work—you, your son or daughter, your male or female slave, or your cattle, or the stranger who is within your settlements.

For in six days יהוה made heaven and earth and sea—and all that is in them—and then rested on the seventh day; therefore יהוה blessed the sabbath day and hallowed it.

Honor your father and your mother, that you may long endure on the land that your God יהוה is assigning to you.

You shall not murder. You shall not commit adultery. You shall not steal. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

«No cometerás homicidio. «No cometerás adulterio. «No robarás. «No darás falso testimonio contra tu prójimo.»»»»

You shall not covet your neighbor’s house: you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or male or female slave, or ox or ass, or anything that is your neighbor’s.

Shevi’i20:15–23

All the people witnessed the thunder and lightning, the blare of the horn and the mountain smoking; and when the people saw it, they fell back and stood at a distance.

“You speak to us,” they said to Moses, “and we will obey; but let not God speak to us, lest we die.”

Moses answered the people, “Be not afraid; for God has come only in order to test you, and in order that the fear of God may be ever with you, so that you do not go astray.”

So the people remained at a distance, while Moses approached the thick cloud where God was.

יהוה spoke to Moses, saying:

El Eterno habló a Moshé diciendo:

Command the Israelite people and say to them: Be punctilious in presenting to Me at stated times the offerings of food due Me, as offerings by fire of pleasing odor to Me.

Say to them: These are the offerings by fire that you are to present to יהוה: As a regular burnt offering every day, two yearling lambs without blemish.

the regular burnt offering instituted at Mount Sinai —an offering by fire of pleasing odor to יהוה.

On Rosh Hodesh Tevet during Hanukkah, these verses are read in three aliyot (Kohen 1–5, Levi 6–10, Yisrael 11–15) and Revi’i reads from the Hanukkah portion. On Shabbat Rosh Hodesh, the weekly parasha is read and the maftir is 28:9–15.

These are the rules that you shall set before them:

When you acquire a Hebrew slave, that person shall serve six years—and shall go free in the seventh year, without payment.

If [a male slave] came single, he shall leave single; if he had a wife, his wife shall leave with him.

If his master gave him a wife, and she has borne him children, the wife and her children shall belong to the master, and he shall leave alone.

But if the slave declares, “I love my master, and my wife and children: I do not wish to go free,”

Y si él insiste en decir: «Yo amo a mi señor, a mi mujer y a mis hijos; no quiero salir libre»,

his master shall take him before God. He shall be brought to the door or the doorpost, and his master shall pierce his ear with an awl; and he shall then remain his master’s slave for life.

When a parent sells a daughter as a slave, she shall not go free as other slaves do.

If she proves to be displeasing to her master, who designated her for himself, he must let her be redeemed; he shall not have the right to sell her to outsiders, since he broke faith with her.

And if the master designated her for a son, he shall deal with her as is the practice with free maidens.

If he takes another [into the household as his wife], he must not withhold from this one her food, her clothing, or her conjugal rights.

If he fails her in these three ways, she shall go free, without payment.

One who fatally strikes another party shall be put to death.

If [a man] did so but not by design—it came about by an act of God—I will assign you a place to which he can flee.

When one party schemes against another and kills through treachery, you shall take that person from My very altar to be put to death.

One who strikes one’s father or mother shall be put to death.

One who kidnaps another party—whether having sold or still holding the victim—shall be put to death.

One who insults one’s father or mother shall be put to death.

When [two] parties quarrel and one strikes the other with stone or fist, and the victim does not die but has to take to bed.

if that victim then gets up and walks outdoors upon a staff, the assailant shall go unpunished—except for paying for the idleness and the cure.

In the year that King Uzziah died, I beheld my Lord seated on a high and lofty throne; and the skirts of His robe filled the Temple.

Seraphs stood in attendance on Him. Each of them had six wings: with two he covered his face, with two he covered his legs, and with two he would fly.

And one would call to the other,
“Holy, holy, holy!
The LORD of Hosts!
His presence fills all the earth!”

The doorposts would shake at the sound of the one who called, and the House kept filling with smoke.

I cried,
“Woe is me; I am lost!
For I am a man of unclean lips
And I live among a people
Of unclean lips;
Yet my own eyes have beheld
The King LORD of Hosts.”

Then one of the seraphs flew over to me with a live coal, which he had taken from the altar with a pair of tongs.

He touched it to my lips and declared,

“Now that this has touched your lips,
Your guilt shall depart
And your sin be purged away.”

Then I heard the voice of my Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? Who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I; send me.”

Y yo respondí: –Estoy aquí, envíame a mí.

And He said, “Go, say to that people:
‘Hear, indeed, but do not understand;
See, indeed, but do not grasp.’

Dull that people’s mind,
Stop its ears,
And seal its eyes—
Lest, seeing with its eyes
And hearing with its ears,
It also grasp with its mind,
And repent and save itself.”

I asked, “How long, my Lord?” And He replied:
“Till towns lie waste without inhabitants
And houses without people,
And the ground lies waste and desolate—

Yo dije: –¿Hasta cuándo, Señor? Y él respondió: –Hasta que las ciudades queden desoladas y sin habitantes, y no haya hombres en las casas, y la tierra quede devastada;

For the LORD will banish the population—
And deserted sites are many
In the midst of the land.

“But while a tenth part yet remains in it, it shall repent. It shall be ravaged like the terebinth and the oak, of which stumps are left even when they are felled: its stump shall be a holy seed.”

About Parashat Yitro

Jethro, priest of Midian and Moses' father-in-law, brings Tzipporah and her sons to the camp, rejoices at what God has done, and offers a sacrifice. Seeing Moses judge the people alone from morning to night, he advises appointing capable, honest leaders over groups of thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens. In the third month, Israel camps at Mount Sinai. God offers them to be "a kingdom of priests and a holy nation," and the people answer, "All that God has spoken we will do." After three days of preparation, amid thunder, lightning and the sound of the shofar, God speaks the Ten Commandments. Overwhelmed, the people ask Moses to speak to them instead. The parasha ends with instructions for an altar of earth or uncut stone.

Now then, if you will obey Me faithfully and keep My covenant, you shall be My treasured possession among all the peoples. Indeed, all the earth is Mine, but you shall be to Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words that you shall speak to the children of Israel.”
